Despite the name, buckwheat is not related to wheat, as it is not a grass. It has a distinct nutty flavour and can be cooked and served in similar ways to rice. Buckwheat is not a gluten containing plant but is usually grown near wheat fields so may contain some gluten caused by such things as rotational crop practices , windblown seed and birds flying over the crop.
